Housing Overload to Farmland Boom...
Look at this amazing graphic from the New York Times. According to the census department vacancies are running about 10%. Our neighborhood is seeing vacancies and some people walking away from their homes. The for rent homes don't seem to be on the market for long though.

This is another article from the New York Times finance pages. Food production is so dependent on the cost of oil that investors are looking to "monetize" every step of the food chain.

Food Is Gold, and Investors Pour Billions into Farming June 7, 2008 12:32 PM - , Organic Consumers Association Huge investment funds have already poured hundreds of billions of dollars into booming financial markets for commodities like wheat, corn and soybeans. But a few big private investors are starting to make bolder and longer-term bets that the world's need for food will greatly increase - by buying farmland, fertilizer, grain elevators and shipping equipment. ..rest of story here...
p.s. I just tested the links and realized that you have to register to view the NYT articles. Sorry about that - but - the registration is free!

Great Info!
To bad our land is being built on instead of used as farming.
Maybe now that FEMA said 1/3 of Fillmore is in the flood plain...we can grow rice.
Gayle, are you running for city council this year?
@ anon 2:47 Thanks for asking if I am running for City Council. Although it's too early to submit papers and make a final decision, I will most likely run.
It is a serious commitment of time and energy so my family has to be part of the decision before it's final.
I did get a call that someone is posting on other blogs using my name. So, remember that if you hear something that sounds a little too strange to be true, you can always send an email to gaylewashburn@sbcglobal.net or call 524-7313 if you have questions.
Gail can ya answer a couple ??'s?
What do you think of this clair kennedy and that blog?
@ anon 9:37. I think Claire is a better speller than you. The blog is certainly engaging.
Im supporting Gayle Washburn,Brian Sipes, and Jamie Brooks for city council 2008.You three have my full support!
Now this is intresting...
From todays star
"Fillmore defends its sales tax deal Cities crying foul over revenue loss from warehouses"
I think this was Roy/Ernie's creative "slick" financing. Skimming comes to mind when I see empty office buildings with a picture on the wall.
Now we have other cities in the State aware of our sneaky underhanded less than honest individuals behind the scenes of our City Government
@ anon. Thanks for the info about that article.
Evidently these agreements are legal - but as you say, a little "slick".
My concern with ours is that the other cities that I know of that do this (only a few in the country) have a 50%/50% split. We were only getting 15% so I think we might have sold ourselves too cheaply.
I have seen the agreement and I am also disappointed that it claimed to provide 5 full time jobs that never materialized.

Gayle,What do you think of the Gazette's attempt to compete with you? RE; forums/blog
do you think they will check in more often than you?
Gayle why did you ignore my question about Tom?
@ anon 8:16 - I think the Gazette's new blog will be great. It's not a competition and "the more the merrier" works for me. Open communication is always a good thing - as long as it's not abusive or idiotic. And, yes they will probably check in more than me. I think they have a dedicated staff person to take care of their website.
Santa Paula has started a new anonymous suggestion box for the City. That could be a good thing for Fillmore too.
@ anon 8:57 Well, I think your question should be directed to Tom, not me.
Deleted comments...Renee do you have my password? How did you delete your own comments?
Hi Gayle,
No worries. Actually, any blogger can delete their own comments when posting on other blogs only while using a registered Blogger identity. I actually ran into some problems last year when I required Blogger registration for anyone who wished to participate on my blog. A few people would post and then delete their own comments. As you probably know, I no longer require registration for that main reason.
As for the deleted comments... that was just me posting responses on your blog in error. I was under the impression that I was my own blog. I apologize for that. ;)
Rene: Thanks for the info. I was not aware one could do that.
@anon (Saturday AM) I decided not to post your comments. I try to maintain a policy on the blog of not making personal attacks on people. Let's try to keep the comments on the issues above board.
If you want to discuss the behavior of am individual, please do so in the context of why you agree or disagree with their actions.
I am curious about your reference to the $25 a month. What does that mean?
