What about grandma?

I've been watching a tape of the joint City Council Planning Commission meeting on January 16th.

There have been a lot of words written and comments made on rent control. Most in favor of rent control for El Dorado.

It just makes sense when every other City and the County have Sr. park rent control.

Do you have family or friends in El Dorado? I have some friends that live out there and I have seen their rent bills. Some are in the $900 range.

They have kept me informed about the issue so I've read a lot of material. It seems like it would have been an easy decision. Particularly since Ventura County had recently revised their ordinance. Scott Lee asked that it be used as a model for a theoretical ordinance for Fillmore.

The statistics are daunting;

  • 150 widows/single ladies
  • 40 coaches for sale
  • 20 abandoned
  • ? veterans unable to pay their rent

Yes, there are some individuals who are financially secure and not interested in rent control. There are claims that rent control will not benefit everyone in the park. I guess that can only be known if all of the leases are examined. If the intent is to benefit all residents in a somewhat equal manner, that doesn't seem like such an insurmountable task. I bet it's been done before.

Since there are provisions entitling the property owner to decent profits plus expenses when calculating increases, how could they be hurt? Clearly, right now, many of the residents have been hurt. There has to be a way to make it equitable and a rent control ordinance based on Ventura County's seems like a win/win.

Gayle I'll comment later on this but,I think the two Davids did a disservice to their cause. They also didn't do the residents any favors with their attitudes or approach on the matter. They made it easy to root for the owners in my opinion.

stewie: Yes, they have been very passionate for their cause. Sometimes to the point of appearing too harsh. However, I think this was a reaction to the manipulation that was going on during this entire process.

Make no mistake, the management company has been through this before. They have excellent resources and tactics and spend most of their time fighting these issues and lobbying. The Seniors for A Better El Dorado have worked really hard for this and the frustration is what you are seeing.

What is awful about the City Council, is they always "placate" their constituents and never have the intention of follow through.
An example is the sub committee, Conaway & Walker. After months of sitting and discussing the problem, Conaway dissolved the sub committee. Leaving the Residents in El Dorado with the original problem that was addressed back in Sept. 2007
The Mayor is always full of hot air and no action.
We need Representatives to represent all of Us.
I agree, there is Rent Control through out California, why not here. Especially for our Senior Citizens.

If you find the answer to that question you might find the solution as well

UHHH why did he dissolve the sub committee??? Was it because he was full of hot air or due to the request of eldorado home owners??? It seems that there is a lot more to this story than the cut and dry version presented.

I still believe the City does not want a trailer park next to the million dollar homes. I'll bet the owners are negotiating a good price for the land. The owners know that it is a drawback for the luxurious Bridges homes. Then the owners are freaking out the city by saying they will let low-income with children! So I think they are just holding out for the big bucks.
