Migration out of state

Did you read this in the Star this morning?

It's true. So many people are cashing out and leaving. How many do you know that have sold their homes and relocated to other states?

I lost two great friends and their families to Arkansas within the last year. One here in town and one in Bardsdale.

I don't know what this will do to the housing market which is already sliding down. There's no telling what the economic future will look like. It's important to focus on sustainability to keep us going rather than growth. I've stated before that our growth will come to a screeching halt without open borders.

Maybe it will open up some better jobs since the article indicated that there might not be enough workers.

Do you have any ideas for sustainability? Here's one...save and live within your means.(if only that were easy)

Amgen bike tour headed to Santa Clarita
Daily News
Article Last Updated:12/11/2006 10:15:24 PM PST

SANTA CLARITA - City officials announced the route Monday for the Valencia leg of the Amgen Tour of California bicycle race.

Some 150 bicyclists will pedal from San Francisco to Long Beach in the 650-mile tour, hitting 10 other cities on the way south.

The all-male race will start Feb. 18. Participants will come to Santa Clarita from the west, following state Route 126 to the Valencia Industrial Center. The course will follow the highway to Avenue Stanford, then take a southwest course to Avenue Scott, McBean Parkway, Valencia Boulevard, Tourney Road and Magic Mountain Parkway, stopping at the Valencia Town Center. To be included, the city had to agree to close roads as necessary and provide police and marketing services for the race.

The race, in its second year, raises money for cancer treatment.

Here is an outstanding opportunity for Fillmore businesses. Do you think the city will do anything? How about the chamber? Last years route was PACKED and I mean PACKED with people.

anon 12:34 LOL, you are funny. You must be one of those prairie dog varmints I keep hearing about. Sure jumping to conclusions there aren't you?

I'm not sure which problem you are talking about. My topic was about the problem of people leaving. I think the reasons are mostly financial. With the housing market peaked out at such a high level, why not cash out and relocate to buy something more affordable.

I guess you could say that legal and illegal immigration are a part of the problem as far as creating a demand and driving the prices up. What other problems are you referring to?

jabba and anon: Sorry to hear that you are leaving. I wish I could have been less homesick when I was in Colorado. We had a very nice home and lifestyle there but I'm just an old prune picker at heart.

The bike race is on tonight's agenda so I'm assuming the city is going to support it.

Fillmore Hawks, I thought that the election was over, Diane has not woffled any more or less than your friend Patti, remember 894 to 400 or less, that is a woffle, why do you not comment on this. As for the planning commission, it seems as though they are doing a fairly good job, they ran Reider out in what 5 minutes from what I saw on the gazette web site, they voted for 480 on the NFSP, to me they seem to be interested in the community and not the developers.

Gayle, I believe, but may be wrong that the statement that 1234 is referring to is your comment on open borders. Every statistic that is out there shows the damage that open borders does to the US tax payors and as a supposed advocate for the tax payors I would think that this statement would not come from you. Take into the security issues and open borders is simply the wrong way to go. Dumming down our education system, over running our medical system, taking tax payor paid for benifits without legally being able to, the list goes on and on. what is amazing to me is that in the 1970's the ag community screamed about the border restrictions that were placed on them for immigrant workers, when all was said and done the ag industry made the most advancements in technolgy since the cotton gin, and guess what the industry is still thriving today. Bottom line, we do not need open borders to solve the problems in the US we need border control and to allow immigrants that will actually benifit the US to come here LEGALLY.

most of the people I know have the state for three reasons, 1) the illegal immigrant problem, 2) the huge amount of taxes we pay, especially since we have such a liberal government in sac that is only interested in enabling people to fail, and to raise taxes, and 3) the reverse discrimination that is occuring in Southern California. Mostly stemming from La Raza and La Mecha.

As for the economic status of this state and the nation, please stop with the sky is falling tactics, the economic forcasts are a prediction, combine this with fear tactics and you get a self fullfilling prophecy. This is what happened in 1939 with the stock market crash, the market dropped dramatically, everyone began to pull out causing it to drop even more, it was like a domino effect. The economic status of the US and California is positive from what most analyst are reporting.

What I do find interesting is your comment about save and live within your means, if only the policians in Sac and Washington would use this premise we would all be in better shape. Not mention a little richer, because 1/3 to 1/2 of our paychecks will not be going to taxes.

With regards to workers, did you hear about what happened after the Hurricanes, people were desperate for work, they were willing to work at any price, a company found jobs for them, only to find out that once ILLEGAL immigrants came to the area the jobs were taken. One company made arrangements for US citizens to work, but the company that hired them stated that they were waiting for ILLIGAL immigrants to come and once they did they would be out of a job. Sure enough about 2 weeks later they showed up and the US citizens lost their jobs. This was crap in my opinion. A crime and the companies that hired the ILLEGAL immigrants should have been fined heavily if not the owners should have been jailed.

I say lets see how many jobs are not taken by legal immigrants or citizens, than we can talk about increasing our allowances for immigrants that come here LEGALLY.

Gayle during your speach tonight you kept saying we, but you introduced yourself as representing your self, who is WE? Do you think that you represent all of us? and how did you come up with owing a billion dollars? Again fear tactics, maybe you should leave the talking to Bob Stroh or the gentlemen that spoke after you, at least he made some sense and presented actual facts and figures that made sense and were not projects based on fear tactics.

Gayle, how many times did Bert answer your questions? It sounds as though the sewer plant was thuroughly researched and resourced to determine the best approach. whata shame all that time and energy you spent on looking at treatment methods only to find out that the professionals had already looked at your desired treatment plant and determined that it was not the best way to proceed.

Funny isn't it how the experts and professionals are two steps ahead of you. ;o)

She jumped at voting for Conaway.

Who is going to call the Fire Dept. to cool him off?

Im very disappointed that Conaway was selected to be our mayor. Remember this is the same man who agreed with Smedley 99% of the time. If you thought Smedley did a good job on representing the people , then we are in for a real treat. One more thing , why didnt any people say they wanted Conaway, except Dressler. Most people wanted Cuevas or Walker.

Now we have 2 years to listen to Conaways holier than though crap and his arrogant self.
I sure hope Laurie doesnt have a bruise after falling off her chair!!!!

First, it is spelled Fennell and second that is not what I said. I don’t know the name of the woman who made that comment was, but she was missing the beard and her hair was a little longer. There are plenty of other cities that appoint the Mayor from the members of the city council; Fillmore is not unique with regards to the selection process.

I said, “In my opinion the citizens are looking for a council that projects compassion, respect and patience towards the community in which it has been elected to serve.”

The election is over, the council members and positions have been decided. Now it’s time to put aside the hurt feelings and stop the name calling. If you don’t have anything constructive to say then I would suggest you fight the urge to speak at all. Negativity is breeding negativity and it seems like it’s taking on a life on its own. It seems that both camps are so wrapped up in wanting to be right that they can’t hear each other anymore. Do you think it is even possible to attempt open communication, honesty and a little respect for another person’s opinion? Perhaps you could start by no longer posting as Anonymous?

If prefer to flame (insult) me, go ahead, I’m a big boy, I can take it.

More time and energy should be submitted in regards to the sewer plant proposal. We do thank Gayle and Patti for doing due dilegence on this issue. It seems the other council members continue push proposals throught without actually doing the needed research.

tom, i commend you for what you expressed last night and more importantly today. it is time to accept the results of the election, respect all the individuals who have been elected to serve the community, value each individuals opinion and patience in remembering not everyone is up on all the issues. there is a time and place for negativity but let it also follow with solutions.

Funny thing, Patti for all her rhetoric voted yes accross the board. She asked a billion questions and than simply voted yes to everything. Maybe this was because she knew that the city staff did do their homework and all the research she and Gayle did was mute and a waste of time, or maybe she was only pandering to the camera and those that think she is worth more than a penny, okay 1/2 a penny. She did nothing, her points were as valuable as Lori's sitting there with no comments. Did she even know what was going on? I doubt it.

As for Steve, I am glad he got appointed to Mayor, and I wish Ray was the Mayor Protem, but instead we have a lecturer, who likes to talk down to everyone and thinks she knows everything, when in fact she only knows her agenda and how to use others for self gain. Steve at least brings open mindedness, he may be opinionated, but he does listen, explain and is willing to admit when wrong or to change his mind.

Gayle, this is constructive criticism, so please do not take it wrong. You really should not speak publically. You sound insecure, unrehersed, tend to bable. Write your speach and read if you choose to continue to speak and read at the podium. I know that it can be hard to speak publically, but if you are not good at it and practice does not help, than stop and let others speak that can express themselves in a manner that will get the job done. I believe his name is tom fennell that spoke after you, he is a good speaker, Patti is a good speaker, however one can tell that she is not trustworthy, god rest his sole, while he did tend to ramble on, clarence freeman spoke well, Bob stroh speaks well, heck even Kevin McSweeney speaks well,

but Gayle, you do not do your cause justice the way you speak. it is as though you cannot get your thoughts together. I would suggest that you practice more, I know that you can write well so you just need to translate that to your speaking ability.

At 12/14/06 6:49 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Gayle, one more question, did you actually talk to city staff about what steps they took to determine the treatment process? It seems that a lot of your research could have been avoided if you actually talked to Bert Rapp and determined what sewer processes have been weeded out and why. Boy, Gayle did you jump into the sewer thing with both feet, it seems as though you may have, but the problem was that you had both eyes closed, not a good thing. You need to see where you are jumping, to avoid objects and to pick a good place to land. On this issue you landed hard and fast, as your whole premise was destroyed.

anonymous 9:49: Glad to hear that you are hanging on every word. You can exclude yourself if you want.

Regardless, the public still needs to have full disclosure of the economic costs over the 20 year O&M contract as well as the 30 year bond interest payments.

If you want to talk about fear tactics, putting our situation in the same category as Los Osos is way over the line.

The numbers I presented on my slide were actual facts and figures. Did you do any calculations? Let's see your numbers if they are different.

10:20 (It is easier to respond when you separate your issues)

Even though it sounds as though the sewer plant was researched, when I get information from competing engineering firms that indicates otherwise I have to question when the stakes are this high.

Here's an excerpt from a competing engineering company...

"This is turning into the usual cluster of misinformation that takes place when technology is debated without a common knowledge base. The post-treatment polishing for nutrients and meeting Title 22 are not expensive or complex, and very low O & M. The VerTreat itself is simply the most cost-effective and simple, low O & M method for meeting the oxygen demand of wastewater, and removing suspended solids. The polishing stage, which we haven't really discussed, is even simpler. Operationally, no one has discussed the impacts of membrane systems, or the $100/month sewer fees to residents with 4% annual increases. To me, this alone would demand an open search for more cost-effective ways of meeting a city's needs."

So, how can it hurt to have an objective technical review?

Didn't you read any of the links on my other topics?

Don't worry, I'm not out to win any toastmaster awards with my speaking. I'm just a citizen expressing my concerns the best I can. You can stop listening any time or continue to amuse yourself with my babbling.

I've tried to be patient, honest and open with you. I see you working your destructive agenda and it's not going to work. When you have something to contribute I will respond to you but otherwise I don't have time.

Gayle,

I agree with posts 6:22 tru 6:49. I think your intent is true, but when you keep asking the same question, get the same answer, why ask the same question again? Unwittingly or not, you are continuing an era of distrust and debasement of officials serving the public that began with the elections of 2002. To what end? Your comments remind me of the old cowboy adage “you can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make ‘em drink”.

Would you be more productive in your effort to keep sewer costs down by working “with” the process instead of against it? Wouldn’t you contribute more to the community if you looked at the “big picture” rather than exploding smaller pieces out of proportion, like growth and traffic? (I never have figured out how you keep linking growth to the need for a new sewer plant, there is no relation.).The point being that most EVERYTHING in this town is connected one way or another. Can you find the balance? That’s the elected representives job and decisions are not simple or not always popular. You weren’t here, but ask people about the deciscion not to join the county in suing the Newhall Ranch project. Who came out ahead? (hint: Fillmore)

If you have aspirations of being a community leader, you have to view the bigger picture, . It’s not your 50 or so supporters, it’s the 15,000 or more people – most of who don’t vote – that live here you have to consider. Please, look at the BIG picture.

Other items: “If you want to talk about fear tactics, putting our situation in the same category as Los Osos is way over the line.”

Here’s the facts:
Los Osos – ignored an order. Got a huge penalty above and beyond cost of complying.

Fillmore - complying with an order. New sewer plant and no big penalty.

So what’s different?

Next – “So, how can it hurt to have an objective technical review? Who isn’t being objective? (back to the horse & water)

Finally – “..when I get information from competing engineering firms that indicates otherwise I have to question when the stakes are this high.”. Show me a “competing” engineer, or anyone else, who agrees with their competition.

Happy Holidays everyone

Anonymous 9:12. I'll try to answer some of your questions but I might run out of time. (I'm out of town and borrowing someone's internet connection).

I'm curious about the '2002 election' comment that you made. Fill me in. As you can tell my questions are mostly directed to the contractors that we are working with. The information that has turned up on American Water and Delafield Hawkins and Wood are disturbing. I believe that part of what we are paying for is their overhead and the fact that AW's parent company RWE paid 3 times that value for them(6 billion). They have to produce a profit that will cover all that. The "process" that you want me to work with is out of control when we have to pay hundreds of thousands for a contract. This is a town of 15,000. The costs seem out of proportion. Santa Paula's bid is about $70 million for a 4.? MGD plant.

On a previous post I copied the law that says that the public is supposed to be part of the process.

Los Osos: they had been mandated for "decades" according to the state water board official that I talked to. They were doing a conversion from septic tanks to sewer. He says that what they are looking for is a "good faith effort"

Also, tell me how Fillmore came out ahead on the Newhall lawsuit?

I think you will soon be seeing some more objective technical review. Stay tuned.

Gayle, you continually amaze me with your inability to understand the big picture, you are so caught up with your tunnel vision that you miss a lot. Open your mind and you may be surprised.

Vetreat was given an oppertunity to present and bid, they did not. If you are talking with representatives from sewer companies, they are telling you what you want to hear, it is called selling a product. You are simply not qualified to make any determinations as to what is best for the sewer plant. Based on what appears to be a lack of critical thinking ability you not able to disseminate between a sales pitch and what the objective data that is being presented to the city staff is. I feel that it would behove you to work with city staff on these types of projects. This is working with the system and trying to affect change in a positive manner. Who knows you might learn a lot. One thing I can tell you is that you would have a lot more merit when standing at the podium if you did this. Right know you sound like someone that simply is trying to obtain information, but is not capable of understanding it.

This is your moral and ethical responsibility if you feel the need to continue this blog, and to speak at public forums, otherwise you are only propagating what you say say you dislike about our city government.
