New mailers...do they work?

As flyonthewall has pointed out, there are a lot of good discussions going on. So many that I can't keep up. I think there were 60 or more posts yesterday!

If you have any items that you want to be a topic for discussion let me know and I will start a new topic for it.

In the meantime, here's our topic for today.

There are new negative mailers out today. Do they make a difference to you? Is your mind made up and will you change your mind based on the mailers? Do you think they work or do they just make you mad?

the flyers do have an impact. For example, if a flyer of candidate is funded by FOF I would be less likely to vote for them. If a flyer is critical of another candidate rather than simply stating ones own ideas I would be more likely to be put off from the candidate.
On the other hand McCall's flyer brought to my door today made a positive impression on me. It stated, "I am not beholden to any special interests therefore I am on a more limited budget but will not allow that to defeat me from reaching the people of Fillmore"

The only problem with McCall's flyer is did she leave it on the door or hand it to my husband. I know it sounds stupid but the city has a stupid ordinance against such things that no one actually adheres to not even those who serve the city.

Anon 1209 Good points, I hate the smut flyers, But I do believe in facts. the problem with the FOF flyer in my opinion is that the facts were presented, but they also but graphics on the front that were offensive to most people, all they needed were the facts. Then Patti sent one out to try and discredit it, the problem is that it was about the EIR and not the GP, thus if all we received were the candidates flyers than we might believe everything we receive without knwoing the facts.

Anon 1:51 I see what you mean. We can't take anyone's word for anything but must go to City Hall and look at the records for ourselves. Nothing less would suffice...Unless we're one of those of the herd mentality and mooo right of the edge of a cliff. Let' think for ourselves.

Someone should check those flyers before they go out. Both Walker's and Smedley's had spelling errors. You pay a lot of $$$ to be recognized, might as well get it right. And while we are focused on the flyers, rumor has it Laurie Hernandez was surprised to be included on FOF flyer with Smedley. So who's idea was that and why? Uuuummmm--I smell some Campbell Soup!

Just checked my mail. FOF, traffic is spelled with 2 'F's. And thank you for your prediction for October 29, 2007 @ 9:50 a.m. See you at the race track.

Let's face it. Both Smedley and Hernandez have the same agenda. First they say they'd prefer less units. Then they turn around out the other side of their mounths and say but the units won't work financially if their are a lower amount. Smedley defends the plan but says he was against it and votes against it then later says it won't work with less than 700 units.
My husband's response to FOF was that everything he gets makes him want to vote for Patti more just to spite them.
I disagree because I won't be satisfied until I see records and documents myself on all candidates.

What is all this obsession with the north Fillmore housing development really about? Fillmore has serious problems like gangs and the Grimes Canyon truck expansion. People, let's get with the program!!!!

Did anyone read Hernandez letter?
She says she isn't associated with Smedley.
Ok everyone, I am Mickey Mouse.

Gayle tell the story about Rosa Martel.
She also wrote a letter saying she did not give approval for you & Patti to use her name as an endorsement.
Strange at the last minute she tries to Flip Flop.
I also heard Rosa Martel was caught red handed pulling up Your signs. Heard the cops were called too.
It is a petty someone is covering this up, do tell the blog the truth about this, Thanks.

Anon 338 good point, what is all the hub bub about, it seems as though the NFSP has consumed us and cuase to become little distracted from the realities of our city. Campaign ploy or true focus? What I find interesting is the NFSP is not the true issue right know it is gangs crime, graffitti, it is finding the root cause of this and fixing it for our childrens safety.

Hasn't it been proven that the human mind retains more information if the message contains a graphic image?
The content of the last mailer was persuasive. I will not support a candidate who has personally benefited from suits against the city.

Totally spot on mate. This race is about more than just one topic. Moderation and balance will be at the forefront of my mind come Tuesday.

Cheers

I can't wait for Wed and have all this slinging of mud by the FOF over. Will this be the last election we have to deal with this type of campaigning in Fillmore? We need to send a message to all those involved that Fillmore doesn't want or need this type of election process.

Did you see all the candidates at the Lions dinner last night? I don't attend these types of gatherings of the locals but know it is the last chance to be seen. For those who did attend, was there a lot of baby kissing and handshaking?

I also got McCalls last handout at my door. It was short and to the point. It had some grammatical errors, but no one is perfect. Diane is the most moderate of all 6 candidates and she will probably get the most votes. She has remained uner the radar - like Linda. I have not heard one word from Linda - only her comments that are repeated on channel 10 and a few yard signs.

Laurie's tied herself to Ken who is tied to Campbell and that maybe the downfall for the both of them.

Gayle's tied herself to Patti and that maybe her downfall.

Patti's last stint on the council caused fireworks. I do know that the first 2 years of her term were peaceful and it was when Ken came on board that the fireworks started. Could the problem be Ken? Just a thought.

My guess is that the moderates will come out on top come Wed.
Anyway, Tues is just a day (or two) away.

anon 3:38, I agree with you crime is a serious issue in Fillmore. One of my friends wants to leave the area because the gangs here in the schools etc. I'm hoping our new superintendent, could make a dent in placing stricter demands on discipline enforcement within the schools. Some of the school board candidates had some great ideas about that.
But an insider at the PD expressed to me Walker was truly concerned about crime in Fillmore. It's not my place to tell you why she is so hard on crime. But the insider said Smedley's a phoney and also told me Smedley was very devisive in the Rotary club.
Anon 10:04 I was also told by an extremely reliable source Patti Walker got along well with everyone on the council, despite her disagreement with development in the flood plane, up until Ken came onto the council. As it apprears he is the devisive person. Or maybe it's a personality clash. Perhaps he was eager to get her off the council because he was miffed he lost against her in the previous election.

Someone brought up Robert's laying low in the campaign. Frankly I think she made herself look pretty good in the candidate forums. I think she's taking tips from her good friend, now running for office, Fariel Masry. Unfortunately for Roberts, there is too much controversy surrounding the closure of the Herald. Otherwise she would probably do better than I think she might.
Believe it or not I will still be undecided on any candidate until I follow the money.
Speaking of money, only saw a check on the flyer sent to me, made out to Richard Francis. Never saw anything implicating Walker. Hmmm. Interesting.

At 11/5/06 6:49 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Was it my imagination or was the check on the flyer drawn from the bank Hernandez works for?
Someone made a point about grimes canyon being an important issue. Gayle was working to ensure lower traffic from the grimes canyon mininig operations before Smedley said he planned on doing so. So far I don't know whether he is doing anything about it. But I know Gayle has been.

Question what can be done about the mines traffic, answer nothing, they are in business and have been there for a long time, the trucks and traffic will keep on flowing, the issue for me is with Moorpark and all their development, it seems curious that none of the candidates have talked about meeting with Moorparks City Council to determine their plans, how they are going to deal with traffic and what they are going to do to ensure that their devlopment will not empeed on us here in Fillmore. It seems as though they are only doing the construction without taking into consideration any of the surrounding communities quality of life.
Any thoughts on this?

regarding the flyers coming in the mail, very controversial. Susan Golson told me her mother, Raelene Chaney, did not give Citizens for the safety of Fillmore or FOF any permission to use her picture on the flyer. So in my opinion the mud slinging flyers are irrelevent. The only thing relevent in the race is the person running and their capabilities to be a councilperson and who backed their campaign financially. Frankly an out of towner backing the campaign doesn't mean much either. Only a special interest who has something to gain financially would be relevant

now I'm leaning in the direction of voting for McCall because she doesn't have the conflicts Smedley and Walker do. Though I still am torn and haven't decided for sure yet. And I wouldnt know who to mark as my second vote.

The govornator, Gallegly, McClintock, and Audra will get my vote and for props, the abortion agenda, certainly won't get my vote. If my teenage daughter were rebellious enough to get an abortion I would definitely want to know about it just in case the murderers botch things up.

For school Prado, Wilde, and Dollar sound like they're a bit more capable than the others to me.

My friends don't know who to vote for on City Council either. my co- workers are looking at Walker and Washburn or Walker and Smedley of all things. The decision is so hard to make it almost makes me not want to vote and to just leave town instead.

Gayle you came here to retire. Wouldn't Montana be nicer? Perhaps I'll take a visit some time.

anon 8:59 I disagree nothing could be done about the Grimes Canyon operations bringing worse traffic. I don't think we should put them out of business like they did in some other City I heard about. But I do think they should not be able to work 24 hours a day and disturb my family's sleep. Gayle has been working with the county on this issue and the city jumped on board her efforts after she implored them to. They wrote a letter or something or other. I believe Moorpark may be fighting the expansion as well.

re-read abortion prop. You say you won't vote for it but want to be notified. Some confusion. Also Dollar has experience alright--with streeeetching the truth. A few more Garnicas would be nice. Raelene "in the trenches" Chaney has my vote.

At 11/6/06 9:44 AM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

anon 9:36 Not confused about prop. I will vote for parental notification. I have always been pro life. And even more than that I am for parents rights. The governement and state already have enough authority over my kids- now the abotionists and the gays think they want them too. FAT CHANCE. The NOW and planned parenthood can go fly a kite.

6.41 Need to look at the attorney billing to see the charge for consulting with Walker according to flyer.
8.59 Both Moorpark and Fillmore cities have had joint meetings on the expansion issue.
9.11 Funny thing about PAC they can endorse a candidate without getting permission from said candidate.
9.26 Fillmore has had long running opposition to the expasion that pre-dates Gayle letters. Mayor Gunderson was very vocal in opposing it years ago. The realistic solution isn't banning trucks, according to those in the know, that can't be done anyway. To say you'll reduce traffic on either 126 or 23 seems to be an empty campaign promise.

I'd like some more information on the Rosa Martel comment. This comment can out days ago. Since that time she has written a formal letter to the papers stating her position. It appears spin control was initiated prior to Rosa's opinion being formally made.

Prior to election night I'd like to hear more about the Roberts Walker emails. The gal that worked for Roberts seemed to be in the know but with held specific information.

I agree I believe that moderation will prevail come election night. After all is't that what the majority of Fillmore is about?

At 11/6/06 12:37 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

regarding grimes canyon i didn't expect anyone to stop the mining operations truck traffic or its expansion. I was hoping they could limit the expansion so that the one company wanting to run 24 hours a day wouldn't wake me up at night. but I guess it doesn't matter since I'm going to be moving out of this neighborhood soon.

Anonymous 3:38: There has been a survey conducted and the results indicated that growth was indeed the most important issue to most citizens. Traffic and crime were a close second and third.

What causes traffic and crime to increase? Growth.

gayle and what causes tax base to increase, how about city revenue for businesses, how about moneys for schools, education programs, childrens programs, etc.. not to mention a decent resturant. Bottom line gorwth causes a lot of things, but again economics 101 growth is a neccessity, but it is smart growth as seen with valencia, thousand oaks, etc....

Of note here is the hypocracy again you say you are for limited growth but your comments here are for no growth, which is it? inquiriing minds want to know

Anonymous 8:51 PM: As I have stated before, give me the growth according to SCAG forecasts or Vision 2020. Reasonable, responsible, sustainable and keep the character of Fillmore.

6:49, 8:49, 9:28, 10:42, 12:37...Here's an update on the Grimes Canyon Mining Expansion. I heard over the weekend that there were approximately 800 comments received. I believe that public hearings may start about February. Obviously, with that many comments there is a lot of concern from many communities. As far as my comments, they were directed towards air quality, safety and noise.

My request was that the mines continue at their existing levels of production rather than doubling. Also I requested that the 24 hour hauling be denied and that truck trips occur between 7:00 am and 6:00 pm.

I believe that the original letter that the city was going to submit only requested sound walls for mitigation and improvement of the intersection at 126 x 23.

10:41: I have submitted a letter to the Sespe Sun regarding Rosa Martel's comments. I just checked and it has not been posted yet. Here is the excerpt re: Rosa Martel...

..."As far as Ms. Rosa Martel’s statements, be assured that everyone on the flyers has given their enthusiastic permission of endorsement. As did you Ms. Martel, on the day you came to my tennis group with ill intent and we graciously admitted you to our group only to find out that you didn’t even know how to play or keep score. During our conversation you and I agreed that I would not use your business name and only your personal endorsement of my campaign. There were witnesses to this exchange and they are willing to tell everyone the truth.

Also, the signs that you removed were not on your property but on the office adjacent to you, so I would say that you maliciously and illegally removed our signs from someone else’s property for personal and political bias. All members of our campaign have made a sincere effort to maintain a high standard of ethics and integrity and my expectation is that all other candidate’s representatives do the same."
